About

Sculpture is the way light, viewpoint, and memory raise personal meaning and emotion from the deliberate orientation of form and material.

Working initially in matte board maquette and then scaling up with steel, copper, or wood - each piece is an intersection of rigid planes, geometric shapes, lines, and voids - to create the perception of mass, volume, and object.

Without preconception, each work emerges from a meditation on the interrelationships between shapes. Additions and subtractions are made until the ultimate composition comes into focus. One part expression and one part literal balancing act, the planar shapes are slotted and notched - rather than welded - relying on material tension and gravity to unify the work into form.

While static objects, each work reads as quite dynamic. Their composition, balance and weight, seem to change with the interplay of light and shadow throughout the day. And as each work engages with time and its natural surroundings, patinas begin to emerge. Colors and textures shift from a machined-coolness to a pebbled-warmth  - a progression that initially follows the course of making, but ultimately consumes it completely.

As I increase the work’s scale and grow in my craft, I will extend these explorations from reading as compositional objects into experiential spaces - architecture that more completely engages the environment and the body.

Relatively new to sculpture, but trained in architecture and working in design and technology - I’m thankful to live and work in Austin, TX.
